What EDI does

Electrodeionization combines ion-exchange media and electrical potential to continuously remove ions from a pretreated water stream. It is generally used as a polishing step rather than for raw-water treatment. Feed quality must be controlled to protect the EDI stack.

Why RO usually comes first

RO reduces hardness, dissolved salts, organics and other load before EDI. Stable RO permeate helps the EDI operate within its design envelope. Pretreatment ahead of RO is still important because problems that damage the RO can also disrupt the downstream polishing stage.

Plan the complete system

A high-purity water plant should include feed conditioning, RO performance monitoring, EDI feed requirements, product-water storage and hygienic distribution where appropriate. The final design should follow the equipment manufacturer’s feed limits and the process-quality target.
