Start with the source (municipal supply, tube well, surface water), the intended use (drinking, process, boiler feed, etc.) and, where possible, a water test report. Treatment selection follows the measured problem rather than the other way around.
A test is not always mandatory, but it makes the quotation far more accurate. Without it, sizing and treatment-stage selection has to rely on general assumptions about the source rather than your actual water quality.
Standard filtration removes larger particles and sediment. Ultrafiltration (UF) removes finer suspended solids and some microorganisms but not dissolved salts. Reverse osmosis (RO) removes dissolved solids and salts as well, at the cost of higher pressure and some reject water. Which one (or combination) is appropriate depends on the feed water and the required output quality.
This depends on feed-water quality, usage volume and the specific media or membrane installed — there is no single fixed interval. Heavier sediment or iron loads generally shorten filter life; regular monitoring of pressure drop and output quality is the reliable way to know when replacement is due.
A WTP (Water Treatment Plant) treats raw water up to a usable quality. An ETP (Effluent Treatment Plant) treats industrial process wastewater before discharge or reuse. An STP (Sewage Treatment Plant) treats domestic/sewage wastewater, typically using biological treatment. Each is designed around a different feed characteristic and objective.
