Daily demand versus production rate
If 5,000 litres are needed over a full day, the required production rate depends on how many hours the RO is intended to run and how much treated-water storage is available. A shorter production window means a higher plant flow rate.
Feed quality affects the design
RO membranes are sensitive to fouling and scaling. Feed-water hardness, iron, manganese, turbidity, silica and other dissolved constituents can influence pretreatment, recovery and cleaning requirements.
Recovery changes feed and reject flow
RO does not convert every litre of feed water into product water. A portion leaves as concentrate or reject. The appropriate recovery depends on water chemistry, membrane design and operating objectives.
Storage can make the system more practical
Instead of sizing an RO unit for the highest instantaneous demand, treated-water storage can allow a smaller plant to run over more hours. The right balance depends on space, hygiene, pump arrangement and usage pattern.
