Two factories with the same wastewater flow can need very different treatment trains. The reason is pollutant load and process chemistry. Equalisation, pH correction, coagulation, biological treatment, clarification, filtration or other stages are selected because of what is actually in the wastewater and what must be achieved at the outlet.
Start with flow and variability
Average daily flow is useful, but design also needs to understand peaks, batch discharges and operating shifts. Equalisation can be important where flow or composition changes sharply over the day.
Characterise the load
Depending on the industry, design inputs can include pH, BOD, COD, suspended solids, oil and grease, colour, nutrients and process-specific chemicals. The relevant list should come from the production process and the applicable discharge or reuse requirements.
Design operation, not just tanks
Chemical dosing, aeration energy, sludge handling, operator attention, instrumentation and maintenance access all affect whether an ETP remains workable after commissioning.
