What DM treatment aims to do
Demineralization systems are used when dissolved ionic content must be reduced for a process or utility. Depending on the required quality, the treatment train can use cation and anion exchange, mixed-bed polishing, RO before ion exchange, or other combinations. The design target should be defined in measurable water-quality terms.
Pretreatment protects the polishing stage
Suspended solids, iron, organics and hardness can reduce the efficiency or service life of downstream ion-exchange units. Pretreatment should therefore be selected from the actual raw-water analysis instead of treating the DM plant as a stand-alone machine.
Monitor quality and regeneration
Conductivity is commonly monitored to identify exhaustion or breakthrough, but the exact control plan depends on the process. Regeneration chemicals, rinse quality, resin condition, safety procedures and waste handling need to be considered in operating cost and maintenance planning.
