Separation mechanism is different

RO uses pressure across a semi-permeable membrane, while traditional DM systems use ion-exchange resins that are regenerated chemically. Both can reduce dissolved ionic content, but their operating characteristics, waste streams and polishing capability are different.

Hybrid systems are common

A project does not always need to choose only one technology. RO can reduce the ionic load before ion exchange, lowering regeneration demand, while a polishing stage can improve the final quality after RO. The best arrangement depends on feed water, required quality and operating economics.

Define the quality target first

Before comparing equipment, specify conductivity or resistivity, silica or other critical parameters, flow, daily demand and the downstream use. This prevents an unnecessarily complex plant and helps make the pretreatment and polishing stages proportional to the real requirement.
