EDI is a polishing process

EDI equipment is designed for relatively clean, low-salinity feed. It should not be used as a substitute for raw-water pretreatment. Feed outside the manufacturer’s limits can cause scaling, fouling or poor product quality.

Hardness and carbon dioxide deserve attention

Residual hardness can create scale, while carbon dioxide can pass through RO in ways that increase ionic load on the polishing step. The exact control strategy depends on the selected EDI system and water chemistry.

Trend product and concentrate performance

Conductivity or resistivity, flow, pressure and electrical operating data help show whether the EDI is stable. Sudden changes should be investigated alongside RO permeate quality rather than adjusting the EDI in isolation.
