Confirm the measurement first

A conductivity alarm can come from the process or from a dirty, uncalibrated or poorly located sensor. Verify the instrument and sampling condition before making major operating changes.

Check exhaustion and regeneration

Ion-exchange beds can allow ionic breakthrough as their capacity is exhausted. Regeneration concentration, flow, contact and rinse conditions should be reviewed together with throughput since the previous regeneration.

Look upstream for increased load

A change in raw-water conductivity, hardness, leakage from pretreatment or poor RO performance can increase the ionic load reaching the DM stage. Trend data helps distinguish a polishing-stage problem from a change elsewhere in the plant.
