What "whole house" actually means
A whole-house filtration system is installed at the property's main water entry point (often right after the main shutoff valve or storage-tank outlet), so that every tap, shower and appliance in the property receives filtered water, rather than only a single kitchen tap fitted with a point-of-use filter or RO unit. This is a different design goal from a kitchen RO system: whole-house filtration generally addresses particulate matter, chlorine/taste-odour, iron or hardness across the entire property, while RO for drinking water is typically still installed separately at the kitchen tap for the specific dissolved-solids reduction that whole-house filtration alone does not usually provide.
What a whole-house system commonly includes
Typical stages include a sediment prefilter (removing particulates that could otherwise clog fixtures or downstream equipment), and depending on the source water, additional stages such as iron removal media, activated carbon (for chlorine/taste/odour), or a water softener for hardness. The specific combination depends entirely on what the property's actual source water testing shows — a system designed for a high-iron tube well looks quite different from one designed for a WASA-supplied property mainly concerned with sediment and chlorine taste.
Why whole-house filtration does not replace drinking-water RO
Whole-house filtration is generally not sized or designed to remove dissolved solids the way RO does — it is not typically effective against arsenic, fluoride, high TDS or similar dissolved-contaminant concerns. Where those are present, RO (or an equivalent process) is still needed for drinking water specifically, usually as an additional point-of-use system rather than a substitute for whole-house filtration or vice versa. The two serve different, complementary purposes.
Sizing for the property's actual flow requirements
A whole-house system needs to be sized for the property's peak flow rate (how much water multiple fixtures might draw simultaneously) rather than just average daily consumption, since an undersized system can create a pressure drop when several taps or appliances run at once. This is a genuine design consideration distinct from the water-quality treatment itself.
Maintenance is ongoing, not a one-time installation
Sediment prefilters need periodic replacement, iron-removal or softener media need periodic backwash/regeneration or eventual replacement, and carbon media has a service life before it needs changing — a whole-house system's ongoing maintenance schedule should be understood and budgeted for at the point of installation, not discovered later when performance has already declined.
