Installation is more than "connect it to the tap"

A household water purifier installation — whether a basic filter or a full RO system — is often thought of as a quick, mechanical task, but a competent installation involves several judgement calls that affect long-term performance: where the unit is mounted, how the feed-water connection is made, whether existing water pressure is adequate, and how the wastewater/reject line (for RO systems, which reject a portion of feed water as concentrate) is routed. A rushed installation can technically "work" on day one while creating problems — leaks, inadequate flow, premature filter clogging — that only become apparent weeks or months later.

Assessing the feed-water connection and pressure

Before mounting anything, a competent installer generally checks the available water pressure at the intended connection point, since RO systems in particular need a minimum feed pressure to function efficiently — low-pressure situations (common in overhead-tank-fed apartments, especially on upper floors, or areas with weak municipal supply pressure) often require adding a booster pump, which should be identified and quoted before installation, not discovered as a problem afterward when the system underperforms. The feed connection itself (typically tapped from the cold-water line under the kitchen sink or from a dedicated point) should use proper fittings rather than improvised connections that are prone to leaking under sustained pressure.

Positioning affects both performance and maintenance

Where the unit is mounted matters for two separate reasons: access for future filter/membrane replacement (a unit installed in a location that is difficult to reach makes routine maintenance more likely to be skipped or delayed), and protection from heat, direct sunlight or excessive moisture, which can affect components like plastic housings and electronic parts over time. A competent installer will generally position the unit with future servicing access in mind, not purely for the tightest possible fit in available cabinet space.

Reject/wastewater line and drainage

RO systems generate a reject stream (concentrated water containing the rejected dissolved solids) that needs to be routed to a drain, rather than simply left to pool or drip uncontrolled. This reject line should be installed with an appropriate air gap or check valve arrangement to prevent any possibility of drain water being drawn back into the system — a detail that is sometimes skipped in a rushed installation but is a genuine plumbing and hygiene consideration, not merely a formality.

Commissioning: the steps after physical installation

Once physically installed, a new RO system in particular should go through an initial flush cycle (running the system for a period and discarding the first product water) before the storage tank water is used for drinking, since new membranes and components can release trace manufacturing residues during initial use. A competent installer should explain this flush step, confirm there are no leaks under sustained operating pressure (not just a quick visual check), test that the product water flow rate and — where testing equipment is available — basic quality parameters are within expected range, and walk the household through what routine maintenance (filter change intervals, indicator lights if the unit has them) will look like going forward.

  • Confirm feed-water pressure was actually measured, not assumed
  • Ask whether a booster pump is needed for your specific location
  • Check the unit is mounted where filters/membrane can be reasonably accessed later
  • Confirm the reject/wastewater line has a proper air gap, not just a loose hose into a drain
  • Ask for the flush/commissioning steps to be explained, not skipped
