What a basic kitchen filter typically does

A simple kitchen filter — often a sediment cartridge, an activated carbon cartridge, or both in sequence — is generally effective at improving taste and odour (particularly chlorine taste from municipal supply) and removing visible particulates, but it does not meaningfully reduce dissolved solids, hardness, arsenic, fluoride or similar dissolved contaminants. It is a relatively low-cost, low-maintenance option well suited to water sources where dissolved-solids quality is already acceptable and the main concern is taste, odour or visible sediment.

What an RO purifier adds on top of that

An RO purifier includes a membrane stage capable of rejecting a large proportion of dissolved ions, in addition to the sediment and carbon prefiltration stages a basic kitchen filter already provides. This is the meaningful difference: RO addresses dissolved-solids problems (high TDS, hardness, arsenic, fluoride, nitrate, chloride/salinity) that a basic filter cannot touch, at the cost of higher equipment cost, some reject/wastewater, and periodic membrane replacement in addition to the prefilter changes a basic system also needs.

Why the right choice depends entirely on the source water

If a household's water test shows generally acceptable TDS, hardness and no arsenic/fluoride concern — common for some WASA-supplied properties — a basic kitchen filter may genuinely be sufficient, and installing RO would add cost and reject-water loss without a meaningful water-quality benefit. If the test shows elevated TDS, hardness, arsenic or similar dissolved-solids issues — common for many tube-well-supplied properties across Bangladesh — a basic filter will not resolve that, and RO (or an equivalent process) becomes the appropriate choice.

A test-first approach avoids over-spending or under-treating

Buying an RO system when a basic filter would have been sufficient means paying more and losing more water to reject flow for no real quality benefit; buying only a basic filter when RO was actually needed means the dissolved-solids problem remains unaddressed regardless of how good the water tastes or looks. Testing the actual source water first is what allows a household to avoid both mistakes.

"Kitchen filter" and "RO purifier" are not simply a budget-versus-premium choice — they solve genuinely different problems, and the appropriate one for a specific household depends on what that household's water actually needs, confirmed by testing rather than assumed from price point or marketing positioning.
