They work differently

UV exposes microorganisms to ultraviolet light and does not create a lasting disinfectant residual in the distribution system. Chlorine can leave a measurable residual but introduces chemical dosing and depends strongly on water chemistry.

Pretreatment affects both options

High turbidity and particles can shield microorganisms from UV, while chlorine demand can rise when reactive substances are present. The upstream treatment train should therefore create suitable feed conditions for whichever disinfection method is selected.

Choose for the complete system

Storage time, distribution length, operator capability, chemical handling, power reliability and monitoring requirements all influence the choice. In some systems multiple barriers are used when the risk and application justify them.
