Why chlorine is measured
A chlorine residual can indicate that disinfectant remains in the water after treatment and during distribution. Too little may provide inadequate ongoing protection, while excessive chlorine can affect taste, odour and downstream equipment.
Source and contact time matter
Disinfection performance depends on water quality, disinfectant dose, contact time, temperature and pH. Turbidity and organic matter can increase disinfectant demand, so chlorine should be considered as part of the complete treatment process.
When dechlorination is needed
Activated carbon or other dechlorination methods may be used before applications that are sensitive to chlorine, including some membrane systems. The need should be based on the equipment specification and measured water conditions.
