STP treated-water reuse: what to check before reuse

A practical overview of quality targets, disinfection, storage and distribution when treated sewage is considered for reuse.

STP treated-water reuse: what to check before reuse
In this guide

This article explains the treatment objective, the design information that matters and the operating checks that help keep the system practical after installation.

Reuse changes the design target

An STP designed only for discharge may not automatically produce water suitable for a proposed reuse. The reuse application should define additional filtration, disinfection or polishing requirements and the monitoring needed to verify performance.

Prevent cross-connections

Reclaimed water storage and distribution should be clearly separated from potable systems. Pipe identification, tank arrangements and operating procedures help reduce the risk of accidental cross-connection or inappropriate use.

Match monitoring to the reuse application

Turbidity, residual disinfectant, microbiological indicators and other parameters may be relevant depending on the reuse route. The plant operator should know which measurements trigger corrective action rather than relying only on visual appearance.
