STP basics: start with the wastewater and operating conditions

A sewage treatment plant is a process system. Flow, loading, collection, space, operation and the intended discharge or reuse route all affect the design.

Define hydraulic demand

Average daily flow is important, but peak flow and occupancy patterns also affect equalisation, pumping and biological process sizing. Buildings, institutions and facilities can have very different usage profiles even at similar total daily volumes.

Understand what enters the system

Sanitary wastewater treatment generally focuses on solids and biodegradable organic matter, but site-specific inputs can change the treatment requirement. Commercial kitchens, workshops or process discharges should not be assumed to behave like ordinary domestic sewage.

Treatment is more than one tank

A typical treatment train can involve screening or preliminary treatment, equalisation, biological treatment, clarification, disinfection and sludge handling. The final arrangement depends on the wastewater, site and required outlet condition.

Operation belongs in the design

Aeration, sludge wasting, cleaning, pump access, odour management, controls and operator attention need to be considered before equipment is selected.
