Map wastewater sources first
Sanitary sewage, kitchen wastewater, laboratory streams and other specialised discharges should be identified before designing the STP. Not every healthcare wastewater stream should be assumed to have the same characteristics as ordinary domestic sewage.
Use the STP for the streams it is designed to treat
A biological sewage process is typically selected around biodegradable sanitary wastewater. Chemical, pharmaceutical or other unusual discharges may require specific management according to facility procedures and applicable requirements.
Include disinfection and safe operation where required
The final treatment and disinfection approach should be selected from the intended discharge or reuse route. Operators need safe access to dosing, sampling, sludge handling and maintenance points, with clear procedures for abnormal conditions.
