STP for apartment buildings: flow, odour and maintenance planning

What apartment and residential developments should consider when planning a sewage treatment plant.

STP for apartment buildings: flow, odour and maintenance planning
In this guide

This article explains the treatment objective, the design information that matters and the operating checks that help keep the system practical after installation.

Residential flow changes through the day

Apartment wastewater is usually not constant. Morning and evening peaks can be much higher than the daily average. Equalisation and pump control can help the biological process receive a more stable load.

Odour management starts with design

Stagnant zones, long retention in untreated sewage, poor ventilation and inadequate aeration can contribute to odour. Covers, ventilation, housekeeping and correct process operation should be coordinated instead of relying only on deodorising chemicals.

Make routine maintenance practical

Screens need cleaning, blowers and pumps need service, and sludge must be removed or processed. The plant should allow these tasks without unsafe access or unnecessary disruption to residents.
