Reject is part of the water balance

RO separates feed water into permeate and concentrate. The concentrate carries a higher concentration of many rejected salts, so it should be included in both hydraulic design and site drainage planning. Recovery should not be increased only to reduce reject volume without checking scaling limits.

Reuse depends on quality and application

Some facilities can consider concentrate for non-critical uses, but suitability depends on its chemistry, hygiene requirements and the receiving process. A reuse option should be evaluated as a separate water-quality decision rather than assumed to be safe for every purpose.

Track volume and chemistry

Measuring feed, product and reject flow makes it easier to verify recovery and identify changes. Where concentrate disposal is regulated or connected to an ETP, the expected salt load and any cleaning or dosing chemicals should be considered in the downstream plan.
