Sediment can accumulate in tanks over time
Dust, corrosion products, biofilm and suspended material can settle at the bottom of overhead and underground tanks over months of normal use. In older or poorly sealed tanks, this sediment layer can become a source of turbidity, odour and microbiological risk that a downstream filter was never designed to handle.
Keep tanks protected from contamination
Covers, vents, screened overflow arrangements and secure access hatches limit the entry of insects, debris, rainwater and airborne dust. An open or poorly sealed tank can undo the benefit of upstream treatment within a single contamination event.
Underground and overhead tanks have different risks
Underground reservoirs are more exposed to groundwater seepage, sewage-line proximity and structural cracks, while overhead tanks are more exposed to sunlight (which can encourage algae growth in translucent tanks) and airborne contamination. Both need a periodic inspection routine, not just a one-time installation check.
A cleaning and inspection schedule matters
Tanks should be periodically drained, physically inspected for cracks, corrosion or biofilm, and cleaned before sediment buildup becomes significant. The appropriate interval depends on tank material, water source, usage rate and local conditions — a fixed calendar reminder is more reliable than judging by appearance alone, since contamination is not always visible.
Treatment and storage work together
A good filter or RO system cannot compensate for an unhygienic tank downstream of it. The complete path from source to tap — treatment, storage, distribution piping and the tap itself — needs to be considered as one system when troubleshooting a water-quality complaint, rather than assuming the treatment stage is always the cause.
