Salt use follows hardness load

The amount of hardness removed between regenerations is the product of water volume and hardness concentration. Higher hardness or higher throughput consumes resin capacity faster, so regeneration frequency increases unless more resin capacity is provided.

Regeneration settings affect efficiency

Using more salt per regeneration can increase usable resin capacity up to a point, but it may reduce salt efficiency. Valve programming should be matched to resin volume, desired capacity and actual demand rather than left at arbitrary factory defaults.

Measure instead of guessing

Tracking meter volume, inlet hardness, outlet hardness and salt additions can reveal whether the unit is regenerating too often or allowing breakthrough. Brine-system problems can also increase salt use without improving treatment.
