How softening works
A conventional softener passes hard water through ion-exchange resin. Calcium and magnesium are exchanged for sodium ions until the working capacity of the resin is used. The unit is then regenerated with brine. The goal is hardness control; a softener does not replace filtration, disinfection or RO when those processes are required.
What should be checked before sizing
Useful design inputs include hardness, peak and average flow, operating hours, available pressure, required treated-water hardness and regeneration frequency. Iron, turbidity and other contaminants can foul resin, so pretreatment may be necessary when the feed water contains more than hardness.
Operation and maintenance
Salt level, brine draw, valve sequencing and treated-water hardness should be checked routinely. A softener that regenerates too often wastes salt and water, while a unit that regenerates too late can allow hardness breakthrough. Resin condition and injector cleanliness also matter over time.
