Why a test report can look intimidating and how to approach it
A typical water test report for drinking water or a treatment-design assessment can list a dozen or more parameters, each with a numeric result and a reference standard value, which can be genuinely difficult to interpret without some water-treatment background. Rather than trying to memorise every parameter, it is more useful to understand that they generally fall into a small number of categories — physical parameters, general chemistry, specific health-related contaminants, and microbiological indicators — and to know roughly what each category tells you and why it matters for a specific decision.
Physical parameters: turbidity, colour, odour, TDS
Turbidity measures suspended particulate matter causing cloudiness, and while not itself always a direct health indicator, elevated turbidity can shield microorganisms from disinfection and generally signals a need for filtration before other treatment steps are fully effective. Colour and odour are largely aesthetic parameters but can also indicate specific issues (iron causing a reddish/brownish tint, certain organic matter or algae causing odour). Total dissolved solids (TDS) is an aggregate measure of dissolved mineral content, useful for screening and for RO system design considerations, but — as covered in our separate TDS explainer article — it does not identify which specific substances are present.
General chemistry: pH, hardness, iron, manganese, chloride
pH indicates acidity/alkalinity and affects both corrosivity of water toward plumbing and the effectiveness of some treatment processes. Hardness (calcium and magnesium content) affects scaling behaviour, particularly relevant ahead of RO or in boiler/cooling applications. Iron and manganese are common groundwater constituents in Bangladesh affecting taste, staining and requiring specific removal treatment when elevated. Chloride, in elevated concentrations (relevant particularly in coastal areas affected by salinity intrusion), affects taste and can be corrosive to certain materials at high levels.
Health-related contaminants: arsenic, nitrate, fluoride, microbiological indicators
Arsenic is the most well-documented, Bangladesh-specific health-related groundwater contaminant, requiring confirmation against the applicable national standard and, where elevated, either alternative sourcing or specific arsenic-removal treatment rather than general-purpose filtration. Nitrate, often linked to agricultural runoff or sanitation-related contamination, is a specific health concern particularly for infants. Fluoride at elevated concentrations is associated with specific long-term health effects and, like arsenic, requires confirmation against the applicable standard rather than general assumption. Microbiological indicators (commonly total coliform and E. coli testing) indicate the presence of contamination associated with pathogen risk and are generally treated as an immediate, actionable result rather than one to be weighed gradually like some chemical parameters.
Reading a result against a standard, not in isolation
Nearly every parameter on a test report is only meaningful in the context of a reference standard — Bangladesh's own drinking-water standards (referenced through DPHE) and WHO guideline values are the most commonly cited references for interpreting whether a specific result represents a concern. A result that seems like a large or alarming number in isolation may be well within the applicable standard, while a seemingly modest-looking number for a different parameter (arsenic, for example, where standards are set at quite low absolute concentrations) may already represent a meaningful exceedance. This is why a test report is best interpreted alongside the specific applicable standard for each parameter, rather than by intuition about which numbers "sound high."
Using the result to guide treatment decisions, not just as information
The practical purpose of understanding these parameters is to connect each result to an actual decision: which parameters, if any, exceed the applicable standard and need addressing; which treatment technologies are actually relevant to those specific exceedances (arsenic and iron removal are different processes from RO for general dissolved-solids reduction, which is different again from microbiological disinfection); and whether the test should be repeated periodically given the specific source (as covered in our water-testing-before-treatment article) rather than treated as a one-time, permanently valid result.
