
Start with source and intended use
Groundwater, municipal water, surface water and process water can require different testing priorities. Drinking-water decisions, RO design and wastewater-treatment design also ask different questions.
Use appropriate methods for important decisions
Field meters can be useful for some screening and operating checks, while design-critical or health-related parameters may require appropriate laboratory methods. A treatment quotation should clearly distinguish measured data from assumptions.
Link each result to a decision
Arsenic or microbiological results can drive health-related decisions. Iron, hardness, pH, dissolved solids, silica and other parameters may influence pretreatment, membrane selection or maintenance depending on the application.
Retest when conditions can change
Source conditions, seasonal effects, process changes or a new bore can alter the design basis. Testing should represent the water that the system will actually treat.
