Water pH and treatment planning: why the number matters

pH affects corrosion, scaling, disinfection and the performance of several treatment processes.

Water pH and treatment planning: why the number matters
In this guide

This article explains the treatment objective, the design information that matters and the operating checks that help keep the system practical after installation.

pH is a process parameter

pH indicates how acidic or alkaline water is. It does not by itself describe all water-quality problems, but it can strongly influence how other chemicals behave.

Treatment can change pH

Aeration, chemical dosing, softening, RO and remineralisation can shift pH. A design should therefore consider both feed-water pH and the expected treated-water condition.

Measure before chemical correction

Acid or alkali dosing should not be selected from appearance or taste. A current analysis and a defined treatment target are needed before deciding whether correction is necessary.
