Tannery and Leather Industry Effluent Treatment in Bangladesh

Tannery effluent is chemically different from most other industrial wastewater in Bangladesh — chromium, sulfide and very high organic and salt loads all need to be addressed together. Here is a general orientation to how that treatment train is usually approached.

Why tannery effluent is treated differently

Leather processing uses chemicals that most other industries do not — chromium salts for tanning, sulfide compounds for dehairing, and significant quantities of common salt used in curing and processing hides. The resulting effluent typically carries elevated chromium, sulfide, high organic load (BOD/COD), high total dissolved solids from the salt content, and strongly variable pH depending on which processing stage the wastewater came from. A generic ETP design borrowed from a different industry — even another effluent-heavy one like textiles — is not usually appropriate here without accounting for this specific chemistry.

Chromium recovery and removal is a distinct treatment stage

Because chromium is both a treatment concern and, in many operations, a chemical worth recovering for reuse in the tanning process, chromium-bearing effluent streams are often segregated from the general wastewater flow rather than mixed in immediately. Segregated chromium liquor can be treated (commonly by precipitation, adjusting pH to convert dissolved chromium into a removable solid form) and in some operations partially recovered for reuse, which reduces both the chemical purchase cost and the chromium load reaching the main ETP.

Sulfide and high organic load need their own attention

Sulfide from dehairing operations is both a treatment and a safety consideration — under acidic conditions it can release hydrogen sulfide gas, which is hazardous, so pH control and adequate ventilation around sulfide-bearing effluent streams matters for worker safety as well as treatment performance. The generally high organic load (BOD/COD) from hide processing typically requires biological treatment capacity sized specifically for that load, rather than assumed from a standard municipal or lighter-industry design basis.

High TDS and salinity limit some treatment and reuse options

The salt used in hide curing and processing means tannery effluent commonly has TDS levels well above what is typical for other industrial wastewater. This affects downstream options: biological treatment processes can be sensitive to high salinity if not specifically designed for it, and effluent reuse (for non-critical uses) needs to account for the salt content, which conventional biological or physicochemical treatment does not necessarily remove.

Segregation and equalisation are commonly emphasised

Because tannery processing happens in distinct batch stages (soaking, dehairing, tanning, and finishing) each with quite different effluent characteristics, many tannery ETP designs place particular emphasis on stream segregation (treating chromium-bearing and sulfide-bearing streams separately before combining with the general flow) and flow/load equalisation, since batch operations naturally produce effluent in surges rather than a steady average flow.

Regulatory context and where to get current requirements

Tannery operations in Bangladesh are subject to Department of Environment (DoE) requirements under the Environment Conservation Rules, and — given the sector's history and public attention around tannery pollution in Bangladesh — this is an area where compliance requirements and any applicable industry-specific arrangements (such as centralised treatment facilities serving a tannery estate) should be confirmed directly with DoE or a qualified environmental consultant, rather than assumed from general industrial effluent guidance. Given the chemical complexity involved, a tannery ETP is generally not a project to specify from a standard package without a specific assessment of the actual process and effluent characteristics involved.
