This article explains the treatment objective, the design information that matters and the operating checks that help keep the system practical after installation.
Pump duty comes from the membrane design
The required pump flow and discharge pressure should be derived from the RO array, feed salinity, temperature, pressure losses and desired recovery. Selecting a pump only from motor power can lead to poor control or wasted energy.
Allow for operating range
Feed conditions and membrane fouling can change required pressure. The pump and control method should cover the expected range without forcing operation far from an efficient point. Variable-frequency drives can be useful when properly applied.
Protect the pump and membranes
Low-pressure interlocks, pressure relief where required, correct pipe sizing and smooth start/stop control help reduce mechanical stress. Materials in contact with water should be compatible with the feed chemistry and operating pressure.
