Catchment quality matters
Roof material, dust accumulation, overhanging vegetation and bird activity all influence the quality of collected rainwater. Gutters and downpipes should be kept clear and, where practical, screened to reduce leaf and debris entry before water reaches storage.
Use first-flush control
The first portion of rainfall after a dry period typically carries the most accumulated dust, debris and bird droppings from the roof surface. A first-flush diverter — which discards this initial flow before it reaches the main storage tank — measurably improves the quality of water that is actually stored.
Storage design affects water quality over time
Covered, opaque storage tanks with proper overflow and screened vents reduce algae growth (which needs light) and limit mosquito breeding and airborne contamination, in the same way described for general tank hygiene. An open or translucent storage tank can undermine otherwise good catchment design.
Treatment depends on intended use
Irrigation, general cleaning, toilet flushing and drinking-water applications carry different quality expectations. Non-potable uses may need only basic filtration, while any potable use requires a more complete treatment train — including disinfection — and should not be assumed safe based on appearance alone.
Seasonal supply variation needs planning
Rainwater availability in Bangladesh varies significantly between the monsoon and dry seasons. A system relying solely on rainwater for a continuous-use application needs storage capacity sized for the dry-season gap, or a supplementary source, rather than assuming year-round collection volume matches year-round demand.
