Different media layers support filtration
Properly graded media can capture particles through depth rather than only at the surface. Vessel sizing and filtration velocity affect performance.
Backwash is part of the process
Captured solids must be removed through adequate backwash. Drain capacity, pump flow and available water should be checked during design.
It does not remove everything
A multimedia filter does not normally remove most dissolved salts or every dissolved contaminant. Additional stages are selected according to the target quality.
