Each media bed needs a defined job
Sand and multimedia filters are commonly used for suspended solids and turbidity, activated carbon for chlorine and some organic compounds, and specialty media for specific contaminants. A vessel filled with “media” is not a complete treatment specification.
Service flow and backwash are linked
Media depth, particle size and vessel diameter affect allowable service flow and pressure loss. Backwash must expand and clean the bed without washing useful media away. The pump and drain therefore form part of the filter design.
Water chemistry can change performance
pH, oxidation state, chlorine exposure and competing contaminants influence many media processes. Periodic testing and pressure monitoring help determine whether media is fouled, exhausted or simply operating outside its intended conditions.
