Treatment equipment is necessary but not sufficient on its own
A jar/packaged drinking water plant's treatment train (as covered in our separate article on jar water plant setup) establishes the technical capability to produce safe drinking water, but ongoing quality control is a separate, continuous discipline that determines whether that capability is actually delivered consistently, batch after batch. A well-designed plant with inconsistent quality-control practice can still produce unsafe product intermittently, which is exactly why regulatory frameworks for packaged water generally require documented quality-control processes, not just approved equipment.
Source water testing needs to be routine, not occasional
Source water feeding a packaged water plant should be tested on a routine schedule (not only at initial commissioning), since groundwater or municipal source characteristics can change over time — seasonally, or due to changes upstream that a plant operator would not necessarily otherwise notice. A documented routine testing schedule, with results retained and reviewed, is a basic quality-control practice that protects both consumers and the producer's own regulatory standing.
In-process monitoring: what should be checked and how often
Beyond source-water testing, in-process parameters — post-treatment TDS, residual disinfectant level (if disinfection is part of the process), and periodic microbiological sampling of the finished product — should be checked on a defined schedule appropriate to production volume, with clear documented pass/fail criteria and a defined response if a result falls outside acceptable range (halting production and investigating, rather than continuing to package product while a result is pending).
Bottle/jar hygiene is a distinct quality-control point from the water itself
Reusable jars returned for refilling need a proper washing and sanitising process before refilling — residue, biofilm or contamination introduced by a previous user or from storage conditions can recontaminate properly treated water at the filling stage if jar-cleaning protocols are inadequate. This is a distinct quality-control checkpoint from the water treatment process itself and deserves its own documented procedure, inspection routine, and periodic verification (visual inspection alone is not always sufficient to detect biofilm) rather than being treated as a simple rinse-and-refill step.
A general (non-exhaustive) checklist orientation
- Is source water tested on a routine, documented schedule — not only at commissioning?
- Are in-process parameters checked at a defined frequency with clear pass/fail criteria?
- Is there a documented response procedure for an out-of-range result, including halting production if needed?
- Does jar/bottle washing follow a documented, verified sanitising procedure, not just a visual rinse?
- Are records retained in a way that could be produced if a regulatory inspection or a customer query required them?
