Groundwater may carry dissolved minerals
Iron, manganese, hardness, arsenic or salinity can be significant depending on local geology, and these parameters are typically fairly stable over time at a given well — but can vary considerably between two wells only a short distance apart. A test from a neighbouring property does not reliably predict your own source water.
Surface water can vary rapidly
Turbidity, organic matter, colour and microbiological risk in rivers, lakes or ponds can change significantly with rainfall, season and upstream activity. A treatment design based on a single dry-season sample can be under-sized when conditions change.
Pretreatment needs differ by source type
Groundwater often needs iron/manganese oxidation and removal, or arsenic-specific treatment, as a priority. Surface water more often needs coagulation, clarification and more robust filtration to handle variable turbidity and organic load, plus more conservative disinfection given typically higher microbiological risk.
Testing should reflect this variation
A representative design considers both normal and challenging conditions for the specific source, rather than treating one test result as permanently representative — particularly for surface water, where testing across more than one season gives a more realistic design basis.
Blended or seasonal sources need extra care
Some sites draw from more than one source, or shift between groundwater and surface water seasonally. In these cases the treatment train should be designed for the more demanding condition across the full range of source water the system will actually see, not just the easiest case.
