Activated carbon filter maintenance: chlorine breakthrough and media life

How to monitor activated carbon filters, identify breakthrough and plan media replacement or sanitization.

Activated carbon filter maintenance: chlorine breakthrough and media life
In this guide

This article explains the treatment objective, the design information that matters and the operating checks that help keep the system practical after installation.

Carbon capacity is finite

Activated carbon removes contaminants by adsorption and can also catalytically reduce some disinfectants depending on the carbon type. As sites are occupied, breakthrough can occur. Media life depends on feed concentration, flow and total throughput, not only calendar time.

Carbon beds can support biological growth

Removing disinfectant residual can create conditions where biological activity becomes important downstream. Sanitization, hygienic design and monitoring may be necessary for sensitive applications, especially where treated water is stored.

Use measurements to plan replacement

For dechlorination duties, inlet and outlet chlorine measurements can show performance. Pressure loss, taste or odour issues and process-specific indicators may also help. Replacing carbon on a fixed schedule without looking at actual loading can be either too early or too late.
