Why there is no single "WTP price" that applies broadly

A WTP's cost is driven by its specific capacity, the raw water's actual quality (which determines how much pretreatment is needed), the treatment technology selected, and the site's civil and electrical requirements — two plants both described as "a WTP" for similar daily capacity can cost quite differently if one needs extensive pretreatment for a difficult raw-water source and the other does not. Any number quoted without reference to these specifics is not a reliable estimate for a particular project.

Capacity and raw water quality

Larger daily capacity generally costs more, but not in a simple linear way — economies of scale exist, and unit cost per cubic metre often decreases somewhat at larger capacities. More significantly, raw water quality drives cost independent of capacity: a raw water source needing heavy pretreatment (high turbidity, high iron, high organic content) costs more to treat than a cleaner source at the same capacity, because more treatment stages and larger equipment are needed regardless of the final target capacity.

Treatment technology and automation level

The specific technology selected (conventional coagulation/sedimentation/filtration versus membrane-based approaches, for instance) and the degree of automation (manual operation versus automated monitoring and control) both materially affect cost. More automation generally costs more upfront but can reduce ongoing labour and operational risk — which trade-off makes sense depends on the specific operation's staffing capability and risk tolerance.

Civil work, electrical and site-specific costs

Foundation and civil work, electrical supply and any required upgrades, piping and site-specific installation requirements (space constraints, access for equipment delivery, drainage) are often a substantial share of total project cost and vary considerably by site — a plant installed on a straightforward, accessible site costs meaningfully less to install than an identical plant on a constrained or difficult site, independent of the treatment equipment cost itself.

Ongoing costs are part of the real total cost

Beyond the initial installation, consumables, power consumption, routine maintenance and any operating staff cost all contribute to the plant's real cost over its working life — a lower upfront price with higher ongoing costs is not necessarily the more economical choice over several years, which is why total cost of ownership, not just installation price, is worth evaluating when comparing options.
