What an AMC is meant to solve

A water treatment plant's performance depends on ongoing operation, not just correct initial installation — filters need periodic backwashing or replacement, membranes need cleaning and eventual replacement, dosing pumps and control systems need calibration and inspection, and small problems (a failing valve, a drifting sensor) tend to be cheaper to fix early than after they cause a bigger failure. An Annual Maintenance Contract is essentially a way of converting that ongoing need into a predictable, budgeted arrangement rather than reactive, unplanned service calls.

What is commonly included in an AMC

AMC scope varies by supplier and by what was actually agreed, but commonly includes a defined number of scheduled preventive visits per year, routine checks (pressure, flow, water quality parameters, equipment condition), minor adjustments and calibration, and often a discounted or included allowance for certain consumables. What is NOT typically included — unless specifically negotiated — is major component replacement (membranes, pumps, major electrical parts) beyond a certain scope, which is usually quoted separately when actually needed.

Comprehensive versus non-comprehensive AMC types

Some suppliers distinguish between a "comprehensive" AMC, which includes most parts and labour within the contract price, and a "non-comprehensive" AMC, which covers labour and routine service but bills parts separately as needed. Neither type is inherently better — a comprehensive contract gives more cost predictability but usually costs more upfront; a non-comprehensive contract costs less initially but leaves more variable cost exposure if a major part needs replacement during the contract period. Which is more sensible depends on the buyer's preference for cost predictability versus lower fixed cost.

Questions worth asking before signing

What exactly is covered — a specific list of scheduled visits and what each visit includes, not just "regular maintenance"; what response time applies for an unscheduled breakdown call outside the scheduled visits; which consumables and parts are included versus billed separately; and what happens if a major component fails — is it covered, partially covered, or entirely separate? A written scope that answers these specifically is considerably more useful than a general assurance that "maintenance is included."

An AMC does not replace good operating practice

Even with an AMC in place, basic day-to-day attention — checking obvious signs of a problem, keeping simple operating logs, not ignoring an unusual smell, taste, pressure drop or noise — remains useful, since a scheduled quarterly or semi-annual visit will not catch an issue that develops and matters in between visits. An AMC is a structure for planned maintenance, not a substitute for reasonable day-to-day awareness of how the system is running.
