Salinity in coastal water: treatment options and RO planning

Coastal and brackish water can contain elevated dissolved salts that require a different treatment approach from ordinary freshwater filtration.

Salinity in coastal water: treatment options and RO planning
In this guide

This article explains the treatment objective, the design information that matters and the operating checks that help keep the system practical after installation.

Salinity is a dissolved-solids problem

Sediment filters can remove particles but they do not remove most dissolved salts. Conductivity, TDS and a detailed ion analysis help define the feed-water challenge.

RO can reduce dissolved salts

Reverse osmosis is commonly considered for brackish-water desalination, but pressure, membrane selection, recovery and pretreatment depend on the feed-water chemistry.

Reject-water management matters

Desalination produces a concentrate stream. Drainage, disposal and recovery targets should be considered during planning rather than after installation.
