Why RO produces reject water at all
Reverse osmosis works by forcing water through a semi-permeable membrane that allows purified water through while concentrating rejected dissolved solids in the remaining stream. That concentrated stream — commonly called reject or concentrate water — has to be discharged, because if it were allowed to accumulate, the membrane would rapidly foul or scale from the increasingly concentrated dissolved material. Producing some reject water is therefore inherent to how RO membranes work, not a design flaw to be eliminated entirely.
What actually determines the recovery ratio
The proportion of incoming water that becomes usable product water (called the recovery ratio) depends on several factors: the specific membrane and system design, the feed-water quality (higher TDS or hardness generally limits how high a recovery ratio can be run without excessive scaling risk), and the intended application. A well-designed household RO system commonly recovers a meaningful share of incoming water as product, though the exact ratio genuinely depends on the source water and the specific system — quoting one fixed percentage as universally true would not be accurate, since it depends on those variables.
Reject water is not necessarily wasted outright
Because reject water still has some uses — general household cleaning, floor washing, watering non-edible plants, and similar non-potable purposes — some households route it to a secondary storage tank rather than sending it entirely to drain. Whether this is worthwhile depends on the household's actual use case and plumbing arrangement; it is a genuine option to reduce net water loss, not a requirement.
What does and does not meaningfully reduce reject-water volume
A properly maintained system — clean prefilters, a membrane that has not fouled or scaled beyond its design condition, correctly set system pressure — generally operates closer to its intended recovery ratio than a poorly maintained one, where fouling can force lower recovery to protect the membrane. Beyond routine maintenance, recovery ratio is largely a function of the system's original design and the feed-water quality, rather than something a household can substantially change after installation without modifying the system itself.
Putting this in context
Reject water is a genuine trade-off of RO treatment, worth understanding honestly rather than either ignoring or exaggerating. For water sources that genuinely need RO — elevated TDS, hardness or specific contaminants confirmed by testing — the reject-water trade-off is generally accepted as a reasonable cost of achieving the water-quality improvement RO provides; for sources that do not need RO, that trade-off is one more reason testing first, rather than defaulting to RO, is the more sensible approach.
