This article explains the treatment objective, the design information that matters and the operating checks that help keep the system practical after installation.
Do not judge from age alone
Membrane life varies widely with feed water, pretreatment, cleaning and operating conditions. A fixed number of years is not a reliable replacement rule. Trend data is more useful than calendar age.
Compare normalized performance
Changes in permeate flow, differential pressure and salt rejection should be interpreted after accounting for temperature, pressure and concentration effects. A correct cleaning procedure may restore performance when fouling is reversible.
Replacement follows diagnosis
If repeated cleaning does not restore acceptable normalized performance, or if membranes are damaged or permanently scaled, replacement may be justified. The cause should still be identified so new elements are not exposed to the same problem.
