Storage capacity, not collection area, is usually the real constraint

Rainwater harvesting system design is sometimes approached mainly from the collection side — roof area, gutter sizing, first-flush diverters — while storage tank capacity is treated as whatever fits available space, rather than being sized deliberately against the intended usage pattern. In practice, storage capacity is frequently the binding constraint on how much of the collected rainwater is actually usable, since Bangladesh's monsoon-concentrated rainfall pattern means a large share of annual rainfall arrives in a relatively short period — without adequate storage to carry that collected water through the drier months, much of the seasonal collection potential is simply lost to overflow.

Sizing storage against actual demand and dry-season duration

A properly sized storage tank should be assessed against the intended use's daily or monthly demand and the length of the dry period the stored water needs to bridge — a household intending rainwater harvesting purely to supplement other sources during the wet season has quite different storage needs from one intending rainwater as a primary source expected to last through several dry-season months. This calculation should use realistic local rainfall data and actual expected consumption, rather than a generic tank-size recommendation that does not reflect the specific property's roof area, household size or intended usage pattern.

Material and construction considerations

Storage tanks are commonly constructed from options including reinforced concrete (built in-place, common for larger fixed installations), ferrocement, or prefabricated plastic/fibreglass tanks (common for smaller household-scale systems), each with different cost, durability and maintenance characteristics. Whatever material is chosen, the tank should be opaque or shielded from direct sunlight to prevent algae growth (a translucent tank exposed to sunlight is a well-documented cause of algae proliferation in stored water), and should have a properly sealed, secure lid to prevent contamination from debris, insects or small animals — a detail sometimes neglected in cost-driven, informally constructed storage.

First-flush diversion and inlet filtration protect stored water quality

The first portion of runoff from a rainfall event typically carries the highest concentration of accumulated roof debris, dust and bird droppings, and a first-flush diverter (directing this initial runoff away from the storage tank rather than into it) meaningfully improves the quality of water that actually enters storage. Additionally, an inlet-level coarse filter or screen (removing leaves and larger debris before water enters the tank) reduces the sediment and organic material accumulating inside the tank over time, reducing both water-quality concerns and the frequency of tank cleaning needed.

Overflow, maintenance access and periodic cleaning

A properly designed tank includes a controlled overflow route (directing excess water, once the tank is full, to an appropriate drainage point rather than allowing uncontrolled overflow that could cause localised flooding or foundation issues) and a maintenance access point (manhole or similar) allowing periodic internal inspection and cleaning of accumulated sediment. Depending on usage and local conditions, periodic cleaning (removing accumulated sediment from the tank floor, and inspecting the lid seal and inlet screening) should be scheduled — an unmaintained tank can gradually accumulate sediment that reduces effective storage capacity and can affect stored water quality over successive rainy seasons.
