Three different claims, often blurred together in marketing
"Purified," "mineral" and "alkaline" water are frequently marketed alongside each other, sometimes implying they are simply different quality tiers of the same basic product. In reality they describe three distinct and not entirely comparable properties — purification describes what has been removed from the water, mineral content describes what dissolved minerals remain or have been added, and alkalinity/pH describes an entirely separate chemical property related to acid-buffering capacity, not purity or mineral content directly. A water can be purified and still have added minerals; a water can have naturally high mineral content without being described as "purified" at all if it has not been through a defined purification process.
What "purified" generally means
Purified water generally refers to water that has undergone a defined treatment process — commonly RO, distillation, or deionisation, sometimes in combination — intended to substantially reduce dissolved solids, microorganisms and other contaminants relative to the source water. The specific standard a product needs to meet to be labelled "purified" varies by country and regulatory framework; in Bangladesh, packaged drinking water products are generally expected to meet applicable national standards for microbiological safety and specified physicochemical parameters, and a credible producer should be able to reference which standard and testing regime their product meets, rather than the label "purified" being used as an unverified marketing term on its own.
What "mineral water" actually implies
True mineral water, in most regulatory definitions, refers to water sourced from a specific natural underground source with a naturally occurring, relatively stable mineral content, bottled without alteration of that mineral profile — this is distinct from purified water that has minerals added back afterward, which is sometimes marketed loosely using similar language but is a different product with a different production process. In markets where "mineral water" labelling is not tightly regulated, some products described this way are actually RO-purified water with a small quantity of minerals added back for taste, which is a legitimate product but arguably a different thing from naturally sourced mineral water, and worth distinguishing when evaluating product claims.
What "alkaline water" claims actually rest on
Alkaline water refers to water with a pH above 7 (neutral), achieved either naturally from certain mineral-rich sources or artificially through ionisation/mineral-addition processes in commercial products. Marketing claims associated with alkaline water frequently extend well beyond the basic pH property into health-benefit claims (neutralising bodily acidity, improved hydration, and similar) that go beyond what is broadly supported by mainstream scientific and medical evidence — this is a genuinely contested area where marketing language often runs ahead of established evidence, and claims of specific health benefits should be treated with appropriate scepticism regardless of how the product is marketed.
A practical way to read alkaline-water marketing claims
Where a specific health claim is attached to alkaline water — improved digestion, "anti-ageing" effects, or similar — a reasonable approach is to ask what evidence the claim is actually based on, in the same way our buyer's-guide article on choosing a water treatment company suggests for any hard-to-verify supplier claim. A pH difference in drinking water is a measurable, real property; the specific health outcomes sometimes attributed to it are a separate, much less settled question, and treating the two as automatically linked is a common but not well-supported leap.
What this means for choosing a drinking-water approach
For most household and drinking-water decisions in Bangladesh, the more directly useful question is generally: has this water (whether from a household purification system or a packaged product) been tested and confirmed safe against applicable microbiological and contaminant standards — arsenic, in particular, given its documented relevance to Bangladesh groundwater? Whether it is additionally described as mineral-enhanced or alkaline is a separate, largely taste-and-marketing-driven preference layered on top of that more fundamental safety question, and should not be allowed to substitute for confirming the safety question has actually been addressed.
