Pre-Monsoon Water System Checkup: A Seasonal Checklist

As covered in our separate flood-season contamination article, water sources and systems in Bangladesh can face materially different stresses once monsoon rains and potential flooding arrive, compared to the relatively stable dry-season conditions many systems are implicitly tested and tuned around during the rest of the year. A proactive checkup shortly before monsoon season, rather than a reactive response once a problem has already occurred, is generally the more cost-effective and lower-risk approach for both household and larger commercial/institutional systems.

For properties relying on tube wells, checking that the well platform and casing seal are in good condition — no cracks, gaps or deterioration that could allow floodwater or surface runoff to enter around the casing during heavy rain or flooding — is a basic, low-cost preventive check worth doing before monsoon season, rather than after a flood has already potentially compromised the well.

Overhead and underground storage tanks should have their lids checked for a secure, intact seal, and overflow pipes checked to confirm any screening (preventing insects, debris or small animals from entering) is intact — heavy rain can also test whether tank overflow routing actually directs excess water away effectively, or whether it has degraded to the point of causing localised pooling or backflow risk near the tank itself.

As covered in our flood-season article, source water turbidity commonly increases during monsoon conditions, and pretreatment stages (sediment filters, coarse screening) that were adequately sized for dry-season turbidity levels may need more frequent replacement or cleaning, or in some cases additional capacity, to remain effective once monsoon conditions arrive — checking filter condition and having spare replacement media on hand before the season starts avoids a scramble for supplies once turbidity has already increased and filters are clogging faster than usual.

• Tube well platform and casing seal condition — any cracks or gaps needing repair?
• Storage tank lid seals and overflow pipe screening — secure and intact?
• Overflow/drainage routing — does it actually direct excess water away effectively?
• Sediment/pretreatment filter condition — replaced recently, and spare media on hand?
• For systems with backup power (generator/UPS) — tested under load recently, given monsoon-season grid instability is also common?
• Is there a plan for retesting water quality if flooding does occur, rather than assuming the source is unaffected?
