This is a regulated product, not just filtered water
Selling packaged or jar drinking water in Bangladesh is a regulated activity — BSTI (Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution) sets standards for packaged drinking water, and a business intending to sell water commercially needs to confirm current licensing and standard requirements directly with BSTI, since these are specific regulatory obligations rather than something a treatment-equipment supplier can certify on a business's behalf. This article covers the general treatment approach typically involved, not the licensing process itself.
A multi-barrier treatment train is the norm, not a single filter
Packaged drinking water treatment commonly combines several stages rather than relying on one technology: pretreatment (sediment and, where relevant, iron removal) for the source water, activated carbon filtration to address taste, odour and organic compounds, reverse osmosis or a comparable process to reduce TDS and remove a broad range of dissolved contaminants, and a disinfection stage (commonly UV and/or ozone) as a final barrier against microbiological contamination before filling. Each stage addresses something the others do not, which is why single-stage treatment is not generally considered adequate for a packaged-water product.
Storage and filling hygiene matter as much as the treatment itself
Treated water quality can be undermined at the storage and filling stage if hygiene there is inadequate — this includes the cleanliness and material safety of storage tanks, the jar/bottle washing and sanitising process before refilling (particularly relevant for returnable jars), and the filling environment itself. A well-designed treatment system paired with poor filling-line hygiene can still produce a product with microbiological problems, which is why packaged-water quality control typically extends well past the treatment plant itself.
Routine testing is part of ongoing operation, not a one-time step
Because packaged water is sold to the public on an ongoing basis, routine testing (not just an initial commissioning test) is standard practice — testing source water periodically, testing treated water regularly, and testing the finished packaged product itself, since post-treatment handling can reintroduce contamination even when the treatment plant itself is performing correctly. What testing frequency and parameters are specifically required is set by BSTI's packaged-water standard and should be confirmed with BSTI directly rather than assumed.
Sizing a plant for actual production volume
Plant capacity should be sized against realistic production targets — daily fill volume, jar/bottle size mix, and peak versus average production days — rather than a generic "small business" package, since undersizing leads to production bottlenecks and oversizing adds unnecessary capital cost. As with any commercial water-treatment project, this starts with characterising the intended source water and the actual production requirement before specifying equipment.
