RO solves a specific set of problems, not "water quality" in general

Reverse osmosis is effective at reducing dissolved solids, including many specific contaminants such as arsenic, fluoride, nitrate, chloride and general hardness/TDS. If a home's water source has one or more of these issues at a level confirmed by testing, RO (or a comparable process) is generally an appropriate and often necessary response. If none of these issues are present, RO may be solving a problem the household does not actually have.

When RO is generally warranted

RO is commonly appropriate where testing confirms elevated TDS, hardness, arsenic, fluoride, nitrate, chloride or similar dissolved-solids issues — situations where the water genuinely needs its dissolved mineral or contaminant content reduced. This is common in many parts of Bangladesh relying on groundwater sources with one or more of these characteristics.

When RO may not be necessary

Where a source's TDS, hardness and other dissolved-solids parameters already test within an acceptable range, and the main concern is instead something RO does not primarily address well on its own — such as microbiological safety in an otherwise low-TDS municipal supply — a simpler and often more water-efficient approach (basic filtration plus disinfection, for instance) may be more appropriate than a full RO system. RO systems also reject a portion of the incoming water as concentrate/reject water, which is a genuine efficiency trade-off worth weighing against the actual benefit for a specific source.

A test-first approach avoids both under- and over-treating

Buying an RO system without testing the source risks two different mistakes: installing RO where it was not needed (accepting unnecessary reject-water loss and running cost for no real water-quality benefit), or, just as importantly, assuming a source is "probably fine" without RO when it actually has an issue RO would have addressed. Both mistakes are avoided by testing first and matching the treatment approach to what the test actually shows.

The practical takeaway

RO is a genuinely valuable technology for the specific problems it solves, and is often the right answer in Bangladesh given how common elevated TDS, hardness and arsenic are in groundwater sources. But "every home should have RO" is a generalisation that a water test can confirm or correct for any specific household — testing first is the step that determines whether RO, a simpler filtration approach, or something else entirely is the appropriate answer.
