Treatment at the source is not the whole story
Dhaka WASA treats surface water and groundwater at its treatment plants before distribution, and water leaving those plants generally meets applicable treated-water standards at that point. What happens between the treatment plant and an individual household's tap, however, is a separate question — and it is where a meaningful amount of the water-quality concerns that residents actually experience originate. Distribution pipe age and condition, intermittent supply pressure (which can allow contamination to be drawn into pipes through small leaks when pressure drops), and the condition of a building's own overhead or underground storage tank all sit between "treated at the plant" and "what comes out of your tap."
Why water quality can vary block to block
Two households a few streets apart, both nominally served by the same WASA zone, can experience different water quality because their supply pipes are different ages, their local pressure is different, or one building's storage tank is cleaned regularly while the other's is not. This is a normal characteristic of ageing urban water distribution systems generally, not unique to Dhaka, and it means a single city-wide "WASA water is fine" or "WASA water is bad" statement is usually too broad to be useful for an individual household's decision-making.
The building storage tank is often the weakest link
Many Dhaka buildings store WASA-supplied water in an underground reservoir and/or overhead tank before it reaches individual taps. If these tanks are not cleaned on a reasonable schedule, sediment, biofilm and occasional contamination from a poorly sealed tank lid can measurably affect the water quality a household actually experiences — independent of how well-treated the water was when it left the WASA plant. This is a manageable, low-cost issue (periodic tank cleaning, checking the tank lid and overflow pipe screening) that is sometimes overlooked because the assumption is that "WASA water" and "my tap water" are the same thing by definition.
What a simple test at your own tap can tell you
Rather than relying on general reputation of the supply, testing your own tap water directly — even basic parameters like turbidity, residual chlorine, pH and a microbiological check — gives a household-specific answer rather than a city-wide generalisation. If residual chlorine is very low or absent by the time water reaches your tap, that can indicate either a long/ageing distribution run or storage-tank issues, and is a reasonable trigger to consider point-of-use treatment (filtration, UV, or RO depending on what else the test shows) rather than assuming supply-side treatment alone guarantees tap-level quality.
Deciding what, if anything, to add at the household level
If your own test shows the water is broadly consistent with treated-supply expectations, a basic sediment and carbon filter may be all that is reasonably needed for taste and residual particulate concerns. If TDS, hardness, iron or specific contaminant results are elevated — which can happen due to old internal plumbing (leaching), storage-tank condition, or supply-side variability — a more specific treatment step (RO, iron removal, or similar, matched to what the test actually shows) becomes a reasonable next step. As with any water-treatment decision, this should follow from the household's own test result rather than a general assumption either that municipal treatment makes further treatment unnecessary, or that it never does.
