Cycles of concentration change the water chemistry

As relatively pure water leaves the system through evaporation, dissolved minerals in the makeup water remain behind and become progressively more concentrated in the circulating water. Left unmanaged, this rising concentration increases the risk of scale formation on heat-transfer surfaces and corrosion in the system.

Blowdown controls the concentration level

Controlled blowdown — deliberately draining a portion of the concentrated circulating water and replacing it with fresh makeup — keeps mineral concentration within a manageable range. The appropriate blowdown rate depends on makeup water quality, evaporation rate and the target cycles of concentration for that system.

Treatment is more than filtration

Cooling-water programs commonly combine side-stream or full-stream filtration with chemical dosing (scale and corrosion inhibitors) and a microbiological control strategy, since warm, oxygenated recirculating water is a favourable environment for biofilm and Legionella growth if left untreated.

Makeup water pretreatment reduces the load

Softening or partial demineralization of makeup water can reduce the scaling potential entering the system, which in turn can allow higher cycles of concentration and lower blowdown volume — an efficiency consideration as well as a water-quality one.

Monitoring keeps the program on track

Regular checks of conductivity (as a proxy for concentration), pH, and periodic microbiological testing let an operator confirm the treatment program is actually holding the system within its intended operating range, rather than assuming a chemical dosing schedule alone is sufficient.
